Amber Lenses vs Blue Light Glasses: What Actually Works?

Clear blue light glasses barely filter anything, and the biggest review to date found they do little for eye strain. Amber lenses are a different tool for a different job. Here's the honest breakdown.

Walk into any optician and you'll find them: clear glasses with a faint coating, sold as armor against 'harmful blue light'. Millions of pairs sold, mostly on fear.

Then in 2023, researchers at Cochrane, the organization known for the most rigorous evidence reviews in medicine, looked at seventeen trials of these glasses and delivered the verdict the industry didn't want: blue-light filtering lenses probably make no meaningful difference to eye strain from computer use, and the evidence for sleep benefits was inconsistent at best.

We build tinted lenses for a living, so you might expect us to argue with that review. We don't. It's correct, and it's worth understanding exactly what it debunked, because it wasn't tinted lenses.

What clear blue light glasses actually do

Very little, mechanically. A typical clear blue-blocking coating filters somewhere between 5 and 20 percent of blue wavelengths. You can verify this yourself: if a lens looks clear, it is passing almost all visible light through, blue included. A filter you can't see is a filter that barely filters.

That's why the Cochrane result shouldn't surprise anyone. The glasses were tested for a job, reducing digital eye strain, that their own physics never equipped them to do. Eye strain mostly comes from reduced blinking, fixed focal distance, glare and long unbroken sessions. A 10 percent blue reduction touches none of that.

What an amber lens does differently

An amber lens is not a clear lens with marketing. The tint is the mechanism, and you can see it working: hold one up and the world visibly warms and softens.

That visible change means two real things are happening. First, a much larger share of high-energy, short-wavelength light is being filtered, not a coating's rounding error. Second, and this is the part we care most about at Skopos, the overall character of the light reaching your eyes changes: harsh glare gets damped, hotspots soften, the aggressive edge of a bright screen comes down. Your eyes stop bracing against the light, which is exactly the tension that builds into fatigue over an eight-hour day.

The strongest research on amber tints is actually about evening use: worn in the hours before bed, they help preserve melatonin production, because the wavelengths that tell your brain 'it's daytime' are the ones being cut. The honest comparison

Clear blue light glasses: filter a sliver of blue light, look like normal glasses, and, per the best available evidence, do roughly nothing for eye strain. If you own a pair and like them, no harm done. But know what you bought.

Amber lenses: filter substantially more, visibly change how your screen feels, have real evidence behind evening use for sleep, and address the day-long comfort problem through glare and harshness, not through the blue-light boogeyman.
